Latvian National Library

We look forward to welcoming you on 18 September 2026, at Stand of Bulgaria and Bulgarian Language, at the National Library of Latvia. On behalf of the country that created the Cyrillic alphabet, we will show you ancient manuscripts and share insights into their influence on our daily lives.
We will be presenting, among others, Codex Assemanius – one of the oldest and most beautiful Old Bulgarian manuscripts, written in the rounded Glagolitic script during the 10th–11th centuries. It was discovered in 1736 in Jerusalem and is now housed in the Vatican Library. It is the first Old Bulgarian Glagolitic manuscript to have come to the attention of European scholarship and is of great significance for the development of Slavic studies. The manuscript is remarkable for its rich decoration, the Cyrillic marginal notes and the calendar, which preserves early evidence of veneration for important saints. The book is compiled as an aprakos, that is, a selection of Gospel readings for liturgical use.
